Agriculture is the mainstay of a large number of people in India’s North East, and it accounts for an estimated 80% of employment in the region.
Whereas the North East has undergone dramatic changes in the field of agriculture over the past decades, in many villages agriculture remains the subsistence economy. Agriculture also plays an important role in the culture of the region, and many of the festivals, dances and songs revolve around the annual agricultural cycle. This gallery introduces us to the three main techniques of agriculture in the region; plough cultivation, shifting cultivation and wet-rice cultivation.
