Christian Art and Indian Cultural Patterns

About the book

This book presents a rich collection of essays on Christian art by some of the best scholars on the subject. The authors explore the art from biblical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives. The book contains valuable insights for exploring scriptures, theology, revelation, inter-religious dialogue and communicating the Gospel in today’s media world. Beyond words, images dominate our imagination; they invade our senses. God’s world is both sign and word. It is precisely for this reason that God’s revelation must find manifold expressions, including visual arts. Art is revelatory and communicative in nature. Artists are considered prophets of our society; they keep expressing and interpreting the realities of human existence and connects us with nature, one another and the divine. India has a rich treasure of classical paintings and sculptures. Christianity in India too needs an artistic expression rooted in Scripture, theology and at the same time indigenous and native in symbolism and ethos in order to nurture the divine in art. May art help us to discover God more profoundly and in depth and may it help us to nurture the divine in the universe.
