Though the notion of the afterlife is somewhat vague; yet, it is an integral element around which the ethics of the tribal communities, characterized by the life of virtue revolves. One needs to take a virtuous path because of the possibility of life that continues even beyond death. The belief in life after death continues to live within and enliven the tribal communities and their cultures. This book attempts to establish the idea of ‘life after death’ of some selected tribes of north-east India. The kind of expectations, the possibility that the individual who dies will somehow continue to live, or live in a particular place called ‘the land of the dead’ in a traditional sense. However, the book is not specifically about the concept of the afterlife. The logical possibility of survival after death in relation to the nature of the soul is however being examined to give a better understanding of the belief of life and its existence in different stages.
